Richard Bookbinder is Senior Advisor to the Brown Advisory Student-Managed Investment Fund Program at Washington College, and serves on the Washington College Board of Visitors and Governors Investment Committee.

Professional Career 

Founded TerraVerde Capital Management and actively manages TerraVerde,  a green-investing investment fund that focuses on sustainability with investments including clean tech, renewable energy, water, and agriculture.

Started Bookbinder Capital Management LLC and was actively involved in all aspects of fund management including portfolio allocation, manager research, and due diligence.

A Founding Principal of Sandler O’Neill & Partners, L.P, a leading investment bank specializing in middle-market financial institutions.  Previously was a Limited Partner and Associate Director in fixed-income sales at Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc. 

Member of US SIF, the American Council on Renewable Energy, and CERES, and a past member of the Board of Trustees of the Darrow School, New Lebanon, NY.  Member of The Intentional Endowments Network and member of the Founders Circle of the Croatan Institute. 

His book, Fund of Funds Investing: a Roadmap to Portfolio Diversification, was published by John Wiley & Sons in 2009. 


Teaching Philosophy

The Brown Advisory Student-Managed Investment Fund Program demonstrates how financial concepts and the application of developing current global news information influences investment decisions.  In applying our research, our student participants actively manage a real-time equity investment portfolio of approximately $900,000.  The portfolio was initially funded in 2008, and students have continued to manage this portfolio over the last ten years while making numerous additions and deletions to the Fund each semester. 

In this class, we discuss well-thought-out investment decision-making that requires in-depth knowledge of the financial markets, rigorous analytical quantitative and qualitative thinking, and basic financial analysis.  The objective of the program is to integrate a rigorous study of the theory and actual corporate events which are relevant to portfolio management.

Our students are easily recognized on campus on Wednesday mornings as they approach Daly 108 dressed in business attire.  This classroom is a great laboratory to test and improve each student’s understanding of financial information and capital markets data, and engage in discussions by asking and responding to questions.  Drawing on my real-world experiences having participated in unpredictable market turbulence spanning several decades, I have encouraged everyone to transform this class into a learning experience. 

In addition to providing students with a fundamental education in the skills and methods of portfolio management, a major course objective is to have fun while learning.
